Unspoilt, Unmatched

A world of magic and majestic beauty waits to be discovered

View of south African valley

This is the setting for those few who desire to experience the distinct and prestigious opportunity to be a part of something so unique, so amazing, so extraordinary. The vistas defy words, the beauty of its nature is unrivalled.

Arguably one of the most beautiful game lodge properties in South Africa, this singular estate might best be described as a natural playground. Untamed, breathtaking and pulsing with the deep rhythm of the African bushveld, Thornhill Private Luxury Lodge is the quintessential experience of the wild lands and animals.

Majestically situated, the private game reserve occupies 21,500 acres of prime wilderness in the Great Karoo, an area of incomparable beauty and sweeping views. While the Great Karoo consists of vast open plains, valleys and mountains, Thornhill is unique in that it combines all these features in one single property.

The private reserve provides a perfect balance of spectacular game and wildlife, extensive flora and never-ending African skies.

Known locally as the ‘Jewel of the Karoo’, animal life is plentiful on Thornhill’s mountains and plains and wildlife encounters are part of the daily routine. Vast herds, conservatively estimated at 4,500 in strength, roam freely across the property.

Thornhill is home to more than 40 of Africa’s most interesting and unusual animal species. Some of the more common include: springbok, kudu, eland, blesbuck, blue wildebeest, black wildebeest, red hartebeest, impala, southern mountain reedbuck, grey rhebok, klipspringer, oryx, waterbuck, blue duiker, red and grey duikers, steenbuck, hyrax, Burchell’s zebra, bushbuck, European fallow deer, wild ostrich, Guinea fowl, Egyptian goose, lynx, leopard, jackal, meerkat and the shy eagle owl.

There is also a herd of 25 very tame giraffe, which may be the largest group living together at any one place in the wild. This is wildlife galore at its finest.

The private game reserve is fully fenced with more than 40 kilometres of steel, to the requirements of the Department of Nature Conservation. This means all the game on the estate belongs to the property, and that trophy hunting may be carried out as part of a conservation management practice. A limited number of animals is allocated for hunting each year, based on creating sustainable populations. Healthy conditions allow animals to grow to their full potential.

The main residence is an impeccable 4-bedroom Cape Dutch-style house of supreme allure and distinction, created with elegance and gracious taste. The lodge is situated in the centre of an award-winning garden of lush lawns and flora. The game reserve even boasts its own vineyard, the first vintage having produced an excellent 50-50 blend of Merlot and Petit Verdot.

There is also a rustic bushcamp that sleeps eight and is located in a stunning river canyon and an additional second bushcamp where four guests may sleep.

The exceptional property is conveniently located an easy drive north of the town of George in South Africa’s Western Cape Province. You may also land at the estate’s private landing strip from Pretoria or take a brief 45-minute trip from Cape Town International Airport.

Thornhill Private Luxury Lodge is one of the finest game properties in South Africa, a quintessential trophy property for a celebrity, jet-setter, entrepreneur, wildlife and nature aficionado, avid hunter or connoisseur of
fine living.
