Style and Sophistication

Timeless luxury infuses this grand villa

Luxury villa in Mallorca

Although property prices in Spain have fallen in the last few years, one region that has kept its appeal – and a more stable market – is the Balearic Islands. Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera have not suffered as much in the downturn, especially at the top end of the market where there is simply not the same oversupply that you would find on Costa del Sol, for example.

The Balearics’ proximity to mainland Europe, ease of access and good weather attract a wide international mix of buyers who are looking for second homes, rental investments or permanent residences.

Mallorca is the most popular destination. It has more year-round flights and a longer season than the other islands, plus a higher standard of infrastructure and services, offering some of Europe’s best real estate investment opportunities.

Mallorca is also one of the most beautiful places in the Mediterranean, with a stunning coastline and spectacular countryside and mountain scenery adding to its cachet. With idyllic white sandy beaches and azure-blue Mediterranean Sea, constant sunshine, pretty villages and a wealth of fine restaurants, together with the excitement of the cosmopolitan city of Palma, the island attracts a glamorous set, including celebrity residents such as Michael Douglas, Annie Lennox, Claudia Schiffer and Boris Becker.

The array of exciting leisure activities in Mallorca is endless, with 22 golf courses, over 25 marinas and glorious beaches offering a multitude of water sports and activities.

Majestic and imposing, this first-class home is a uniquely designed testament to casual luxury and timeless sophistication. Combining elegant design and fine architectural detailing with modern finishes, the luxury home is truly an exceptional residence.

The quality finishes and refined interior design allow for sophisticated entertaining, as well as comfortable relaxation. Offering 600m² of luxury, the family villa features five bedrooms, a lovely living room with open fireplace, an office and a guest apartment.

Boasting a second sea-line position, the villa in Cala Vinyas is within walking distance of gorgeous sandy beaches, yet only a 5-minute drive to Palma. The house is complemented by 1,950m² of fabulous gardens, a swimming pool and 120m² of covered terrace with barbecue area.

The architecturally magnificent villa has been designed for connoisseurs of fine living.

Price: €3.49 million.

Contemporary modernism

Magnificent Bauhaus-style villa with dazzling views

Modernist villa in Mallorca

Tranquil, sophisticated and beautiful, Mallorca is a true Mediterranean island paradise. Uncrowded beaches, pine-clad mountains and verdant valleys, and not least the island capital of Palma with its beautiful architecture, all explain why it has become a highly sought-after escape and an excellent place to invest in property.

The island is easy to get to, with frequent, year-round flights from most major European cities and ferry services from mainland Spain. The island population of almost 900,000 enjoys the highest disposable income per capita in Spain, adding to the sense of prosperity.

The wealth is understated rather than brash, however, and the island’s famous residents, including Claudia Schiffer, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Richard Branson, Boris Becker, Rafael Nadal and Michael Douglas have their privacy respected. King Juan Carlos and his son, Prince Felipe, regularly attend the family retreat, Palma’s Marivent Palace, where they are able to enjoy the sun and scenery without the harassment of paparazzi.

The property market in Mallorca is distinctly different to what can be seen on the mainland costas. Tight planning regulations have protected the island’s authentic beauty and kept it free from the expansive and overdeveloped projects that tend to dominate many Spanish resorts.

Another influencing factor is the island’s geography and the fact that there is a very limited amount of land that can be developed or built upon. National parks and protected areas of outstanding natural beauty, including the newly designated UNESCO World Heritage Site of Serra de Tramuntana, make up much of the mere 3,640 square kilometres of land.

Scarcity creates credibility, trust and appeal. Even if the British presence has diminished due to the strength of the Euro, the Germans certainly are buying, along with the Swiss, Dutch and the Scandinavians.

A sure sign of Mallorca’s popularity as an exclusive escape is the increasing number of super-yachts and private jets. Port Adriano now features new mooring berths for yachts of up to 60 metres, while the recently approved expansion of the airport at Son Bonet will create more capacity for private jets and helicopters.

For those searching for the alluring combination of luxury, privacy and exclusivity, Mallorca is the obvious choice. But the most important reason that so many people want to own a slice of this paradise once they have visited Mallorca is the simple fact that they fell in love with the island.

This magnificent contemporary residence is designed in a Modernist fashion, to reflect the style of high Bauhaus, and to present all the aspirational qualities of modern family living. The design of this ‘White House’ is a variation on Bauhaus architecture, emphasising the simple geometric form and sleek appearance, purposefully stripped of any ornamentation or excess.

With the streamlined appearance of modern architecture, the iconic design offers 350m² of stylish and elegant living space. It features four bedrooms, a spacious open-plan kitchen and a lounge-dining area with a gallery.

The generous and flowing spaces are suffused with light from sliding glass doors, inviting the living space to flow into the outdoors. The striking villa sits on 835m² of land and comes with a Mediterranean garden, swimming pool and several terraces.

Ideally situated southwest of the capital, Palma de Mallorca, the stunning villa boasts 180-degree sea views, overlooking the Royal Palace and the harbour of Palma. It is 20 minutes’ drive from the airport, ten minutes from the centre of Palma and five minutes from the glitzy marina of Puerto Portals and several beaches. The luxury villa is situated in the immediate vicinity of Bendinat Golf Course, an attractive course with spectacular sea views.

With sweeping panoramas, glamorous and cool interiors and inspirational architecture, the villa represents the pure fusion of elegance, function and sophistication.

Price: € 2.45 million.

Steeped in history and beauty

A world of natural splendour surrounds this estate

Estate in Mallorca, Spain

Here is a singular opportunity to own one of the most historic posesiones (country estates) in the north of Mallorca.

With a beautiful and tranquil setting on the slopes of the Tramuntana range, the exceptional 13th-century country estate sits majestically on 620 acres in the desirable Vall d’en March.

It is not just a beautiful Mallorquin finca, surrounded by wildlife and 360-degree views, but also a working farm and organic olive estate, with thousands of ancient olive trees, a herd of Mallorquin and Spanish sheep, a large green garden and carob trees.

The estate is a haven for lovers of outdoor living, offering great opportunities for hiking, biking, climbing, hunting (wild birds, goats and rabbits are plentiful), mushroom picking, bird watching and horse riding, plus plenty of solitude, tranquillity and seclusion from the outside world.

While most of the main house was completed by the late 19th century, the house was originally built around a 13th-century Moorish tower, which is the centre of one of the two patios. It has a spiral staircase that leads to a large attic and a matanza room, used traditionally to cure the locally produced hams and sausages.

The historic farmhouse offers approximately 1,300m² of living space and is comprised of nine bedrooms, two kitchens, a living room, dining room and three sitting rooms. Nearly every room has a fireplace. It also features a bodega (wine cellar), a carpenter’s shop and two large covered outdoor ovens. There is an independent, single-bedroom staff apartment with kitchen.

One of the standout features is the enormous olive pressing room, where oil is still produced in the traditional way. It boasts an original olive oil press, a tafona, dating back to 1833. A small portion of the olives is used to produce oil in this press, using an ancient millstone and the resident mule. The remainder is pressed in a nearby co-operative press, producing oil of a high commercial standard which, as an ecological oil, commands a premium price.

Altogether there are ten major buildings on the estate, including two large, 2-storey garages and two stables containing five stalls. There is a recently constructed hunting lodge that boasts views as far as the Bay of Alcudia. It offers a great hall with vaulted ceilings and a fireplace, two bedrooms, kitchen and a lookout tower. At the top of the farm is a large valley with arable fields and a shepherd’s hut.

Within the grounds of the property are numerous fruit trees producing figs, apricots, plums, grapes, peaches, pomegranates, persimmons, apples, pears, lemons and oranges. There are several fields, currently planted in alfalfa, that are suitable for fruit trees or an expanded green garden or vineyard. Garden enthusiasts will love the hundreds of rose bushes and the full kitchen garden surrounding the main house and pool area.

During the fall, there is an abundance of wild mushrooms, including the area’s famous chanterelles. For those who enjoy nature at its finest and wildest state, there are wild martens, local mountain cats (ginetas) and other wildlife, as well as a wide variety of flora. The estate is also home to eagles, hawks and the extremely rare black vulture. Many migratory birds travelling between Northern Europe to Africa stop off, too.

The exceptional country estate is located in Vall d’en March, a lovely valley at the bottom of the Tramuntana mountain range, about 12 minutes from the town Pollensa. The sea is only a 15-minute-drive away.

This is country living at its best.

Price: € 8.75 million.
